Headstone commemorating Clifford Charlesworth in Jump and Hemingfield cemetery |
Many of the soldiers are remembered on both the Wombwell and Jump war memorials. One such soldier is Sergeant Clifford Charlesworth. He is commemorated on the grave of his parents Charlotte and James Charlesworth, although he is actually buried in Guards' Cemetery, which is located in Les Boeufs, France. Most families would be unable to make regular trips to France, (if at all) to visit a grave. Adding a soldiers name to a headstone gave families a place to visit and remember their lost child, as well as a sense of closeness.

Clifford Charlesworth - Barnsley Chronicle Nov. 11th 1916 Image with thanks to the Barnsley Archives |
Clifford Charlesworth fell in action on 25th September 1916, while serving with the 10th Battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. His death was announced in the Barnsley Chronicle on 4th November 1916. He had joined the army shortly after the out break of war and had been in France for 11 months before his death.
The headstones I photographed can be found on the
War Graves page of this blog. I have also added the missing headstones to the Jump and Hemingfield cemetery page on
findagrave.com. Jump and Hemingfield cemetery also has a group on
livesofthefirstworldwar.org.
