Darfield All Saint's Churchyard

I recently discovered that there are two Wombwell soldiers commemorated on graves in All Saint's Churchyard, Darfield . Yesterday, I decided to visit the church and photograph the two headstones, which belong to Francis Micheal Mullins and Albert Greenhow, for my blog. I have now created a page for All Saint's Churchyard and added it to War Graves menu page.

Headstone commemorating
Francis Micheal Mullin
I was able to find the two graves using an excellent leaflet produced by the Friends of Darfield Churchyard. It has information on all the first and second  world war soldiers buried or commemorated within the churchyard. However, I'm only adding the two soldiers remembered on the St. Mary's memorial to this blog. If you're considering making a trip to view the graves, now is a very good time of year to see them, as the overgrowth has been cut back leaving the headstones visible.

Kerbstone commemorating
Albert Greenhow
On this occasion I was unable to gain access to the church and photograph the WWI memorial within or get in to the church hall where Albert Greenhow also has a commemorative table. I will make a return trip to photograph them at some point in the future. Even so I still had a very productive day. As I not only managed to visit  the churchyard, but I also photographed the Middlewood Shrine and the Cortonwood memorial for their respective blog pages.

A full index of  soldiers commemorated in All Saint's Churchyard can be found on the Barnsley War Memorial Project website.

A list of burials can be found on the CWGC.org website.

The Road to War Exhibition - 22 Sept - 11 Jan 2015

There is only a couple of weeks left to see the "Road to War" Exhibition at Experience Barnsley. It finishes on 11th January 2015. So make sure you visit this Christmas holiday - if you haven't seen it already.

Wallet and cap badge
Which belonged to Raymond Hudson

The exhibitions is filled with many interesting artifacts relating to Barnsley soldiers. Readers of this blog might be fascinated to learn that there are items belonging to two Wombwell soldiers on display. Raymond Hudson's cap badge and wallet can be seen in one cabinet and a hand written letter to Cooper Allen Robinson mother, informing her of his death can be viewed in another.

Letter of condolence and medals
of Cooper Allen Robinson

Before I started this blog, I had the pleasure of being invited to the exhibition opening, back in September. Which was also attended by the Mayor of Barnsley and MP Dan Jarvis. I have loaned Experience Barnsley items that once belonged to my great great uncle Raymond Hudson, as well as some photographs that were used in the slide projection by the door. I also lent them other artifacts such as photographs, postcards, news clippings and letters that were not used. I am looking forward to getting them back so I can start putting them on my blog.

Book Launch - Kingstone Remembers The GREAT WAR 1914 -1918

I have been meaning to post this for a while. On Sunday 6th December I was present at St. Edwards Church, Kingstone for the launch of a book called Kingstone Remembers The GREAT WAR 1914 -1918 by Gill Brooks. The book is very well researched and formatted. The most exciting part for me, is that it features a soldier named Ernest Hyde, who is also remembered on the Wombwell memorial. He was brought up by his Grandfather who lived in Kingstone, while his mother resided in Wombwell. That is why he features on both memorials. The book priced £8 is very informative and well worth the money.

Photograph from the Hexham Courant 10th Jan 2011

Other Information:
Alfred competed in the 1908 Olympic games. Taking part in the Greek discus, Freestyle javelin, Pole vault and Standing high jump. Unfortunately his final ranking in these events is unknown. Alfred however proved himself an excellent amateur athlete in other competitions he entered. He competed in the AAA Hammer throw from 1905 -1914 and won the championship in 1910. He won the AAA Pole Vault in 1909. He was three times runner up in the English discus throwing championship. As well as being an athlete he was also a student of music.

Alfred Ernest was born in Wombwell on 1st October 1879. He was baptised on 28th November 1879. Alfred's mother was named Harriet Jecks Flaxman. Though Alfred was to have little memory of her as she died before his second birthday. Her death came in the Autumn of 1880, shortly after the birth of Alfred's younger brother and only sibling Samuel Christopher Reeve Flaxman. Alfred's father was born in 1850 at Great Ryhburgh, Norfolk. He was became rector of St Mary's Church, Wombwell in the 1870s. The family lived at 10 Summer Lane (The Rectory) along with  three servants. One of whom, Mary Crookson would remain with Alfred's father until his death.

By 1901 the family were no longer living in Wombwell. Alfred's father had taken a new position as rector in Grundisburgh, Suffolk. His sons were away pursuing their respective careers. Alfred in athletics and Samuel in medicine. Both men would eventually settle in London. It seems the only tie to Wombwell that remained was their mother's grave. In 1911 Alfred was studying music in Marylebone, London While his father had retired to Bournemouth to live with his sister-in-law, (Alfred's Aunt Elizabeth Reeve.)

During WWI Alfred Flaxman served as Second Lieutenant with the 1/6th South Staffordshire regiment. He was commissioned on 18th June 1915. Once he arrived in France he was given command of battalion of bombers, where his athletic abilities and body building skills were put to good use. Once during a training exercise at the Bull Ring in Etaples, he managed to throw a grenade a full 75 yards. He was chosen to lead a battalion of bombers at the Somme. Unable to find away through their intended path his group got caught between the wires. They were shot down by enemy fire while exposed in the open. Alfred was killed in action on 1st July 1916, aged 36. His brother Captain Samuel Flaxman who was serving with the 1/2nd North Midland Field Ambulance searched for Alfred's body without success. His remains were never recovered and subsequently he is remembered on the Thiepval memorial, along with the other missing of the Somme.
His superior LT Col F A M Webster described A E Flaxman as:
"A simple gentleman, the best of sportsmen and a very gallant soldier"

Arthur Russell - Dead Man's Penny

Last Friday's Barnsley Chronicle featured an article about a dead man's penny, that came into my possession after it had been taken in to a scrapyard near my home. The death penny is a five inch solid bronze plaque modeled on the back of an old style penny. These plaques were given to the families of  over a million soldiers who died during the first world war. This one belonged to a man named Arthur Russell. Despite their being several Arthur Russells who died in WWI, my research found only one possible local candidate, and he is remembered on the Cross Street memorial at Monk Bretton.

Barnsley Chronicle 15th July 1916
Clipping from the Barnsley Archives.
With thanks to Linda Hutton for finding it.

According to a letter printed in the Barnsley Chronicle on July 15th 1916, Arthur was awarded the military medal while serving as a stretcher bearer with the 14th battalion of the York and Lancaster regiment. This is one of Barnsley Pals battalions. (Arthur is in fact mentioned briefly in Jon Cooksey's book the Barnsley Pals.) The letter is even signed by two soldiers from the Wombwell war memorial - W. R Elleway and Samuel Ellis.  Arthur was however serving with the Durham Light Infantry at the time of his death. It was very sad to learn during the course of my research that his mother had only two children, both of whom died during the war. Of course we can never know for certain that it is the same Arthur Russell as on the death penny, but I feel that it is highly likely.

The plaque is now in the safe keeping of Councillor Steve Green and The Friends of Monk Bretton War Memorial. After speaking with Councillor Green and hearing his plans for the Monk Bretton war memorial. Which include involving the local school children in it's upkeep and decoration. I am confident I made the right decision to donate it to his group.  I think it is only right that the plaque should go home to Monk Bretton.
