Book launch for Thurlstone and Hoylandswaine 1914-1918 - "THE FALLEN, THEIR STORIES"
On Tuesday evening I had the privilege of attending the launch of a new book on First world war soldiers titled; 'Thurlstone and Hoylandswaine 1914-1918 - THE FALLEN, THEIR STORIES'. The book written by Penistone History Group members Rex and Janet Dyson expands on research begun by the late Rev. Richard Weller. The book is a sequel to 'STORIES BEHIND THE NAMES, Penistone War Memorial 1914 -1918, which launched in July of this year.
Along side the book launch was an exhibition of WWI artifacts; Some items such as letters were also featured in the book. Other more unusual items on show included a trench gramophone with promotional material.
This book is fascinating to me from both a research and personal point of view, as the book features a recently discovered WWI relative of mine named George Beever. And for my research there is an extensive section on Tom Lockwood. Who is also remembered on the St. Mary's memorial due to him working at Mitchell Main's colliery and having a sister living on Blythe street in Wombwell.
Another high point of the evening for members of the Barnsley War Memorial Project in attendance was the discovery of several memorials within St. Saviour's Church that were previously unknown to them. These included a Second World War Roll of Honor kept in a small alcove and a brass commemorative plaque fixted to a wooden table The vicar gave them permission to be photographed, So they will probably be appearing on the BWMP website in the near future.
Thurlstone and Hoylandswaine 1914-1918 - "THE FALLEN, THEIR STORIES" is available to buy from for £8 (it is definitely great value for money)
STORIES BEHIND THE NAMES, Penistone War Memorial 1914 -1918 is available to buy from Penistone Library and Clark's Chemist.
