Private Stanley Sokell - Family Headstone




Inscription:
In Loving Memory / Of / Herbert Sokell / The dearly beloved husband of /
Sarah Ann Sokell / Of Wombwell Main / Who departed this life April 26th 1911 /
Aged 48 years / Also Pte. STANLEY SOKELL / 8th East Yorks Regt. / Son of the above /
Who was killed in action / In France May 3rd 1917 / Aged 19 years /
But the unknown grave is the bitterest / blow, none but aching hearts do know /
Also the above named / Sarah Ann Sokell / died June 23rd 1953 / aged 87 years /
We cannot Lord thy purpose see / But all is well that's done by Thee. /
Also Elizabeth / Daughter of the above / Who died March 1st 1884, aged 8 months.

As implied by the verse 'the unknown grave is the bitterest', Stanley Sokell is not buried in this grave. His body was never recovered and his last resting place remains unknown.
